The IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast #GWB2021 will be held on 9 February 2021, two days prior to the United Nations Day of Women and Girls in Science. The theme for the 2021 event is “Empowering Diversity in Science”.

Goal 5 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. As quoted in the recent Gender Gap in Science study, and stated by the UN, “Gender Equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.”

IUPAC is in a unique position to serve as a leading organization and global platform where these issues can be addressed. Previous Global Women’s Breakfasts events were organized by IUPAC in 2011, 2019 and in 2020, and highlighted an ongoing need to build a network of both women and men working together to address the barriers and inequalities faced by women in science.

Program of the event:
  • Welcome to the IUPAC Global Women’s breakfast. Video message from the GWB Project chairs.
  • Round of (informal) self-introductions.
  • Breakout session: let’s split into small groups, get to know each other better and talk about the most relevant challenges for our career development (e.g. work/life balance)
  • Get back together, and summarize the topics discussed in the breakout rooms.
  • Farewell message. And for the people who wants to stay, let’s plan follow-up meetings and actions.
